Effective SCR system repair requires moving beyond simple fault code reading and diving into the sensor’s live data stream. This real-time information is the key to accurately diagnosing issues, whether the problem lies with the sensor itself or with the broader emissions system (such as DEF dosing or the SCR catalyst).
1. Upstream vs. Downstream NOx Comparison (Conversion Efficiency)
The most critical diagnostic function is comparing the readings of the two NOx sensors.
- Upstream Sensor (Inlet): Measures the NOx concentration entering the SCR catalyst. This value reflects engine-out NOx.
- Downstream Sensor (Outlet): Measures the NOx concentration exiting the SCR catalyst. This value reflects tailpipe NOx.
- Interpretation: In a healthy, warmed-up SCR system, the Outlet NOx reading must be significantly lower than the Inlet NOx reading. A healthy SCR conversion efficiency is typically 80% or higher.
- If both Inlet and Outlet readings are high and nearly identical, it often indicates a failed SCR catalyst, a severe DEF dosing problem, or a failure in one of the NOx sensors.
2. Decoding Ammonia Cross-Sensitivity (The Slip Indicator)
NOx sensors utilize electrochemical principles that make them inherently cross-sensitive to Ammonia (NH3), the active reductant in DEF. This apparent flaw is used as a safety feature.
- What to Look For: If the DEF dosing rate is too high, unreacted NH3 will “slip” past the SCR catalyst. When the downstream NOx sensor detects this NH3 slip, its output reading will temporarily spike upward.
- Interpretation: A sudden high reading from the Outlet NOx sensor that does not correlate with engine load changes is often an indicator of Ammonia Slip, not a NOx spike. This points toward an issue with DEF dosing control, not necessarily a failed NOx sensor.
